The potato is the third most important food crop in the world after rice and wheat in terms of human consumption. More than a billion people worldwide eat potatoes, and global total crop production exceeds 300 million metric tons

Potato in Kenya is an important food and cash crop that plays a major role in food security and is only second to maize in terms of utilization. The crop has higher yields per unit area(40 tonnes per hectare or 40 tonnes per 2.5 acres) than most of the major food crops including maize and beans.

Potato is consumed widely and acts as a source of raw material for many industries. The sector employs over 3.5 million actors across the value chain and contributes over Ksh 50 Billion to the economy. Despite this crucial role, its full potential is yet to be realized.
